At one time the definition of the genre of the game was a simple task. For example, in the early 80’s you could, without looking at either the title or the cover, say, “This is a platformer,” and almost certainly guess. Today everything is much more complicated. Is that with the “casuals” is simple: a music game or an interactive quiz can be seen immediately. Well, and racing games do not confuse with anything: cars on screenshots do not lie.
You can make your first assumption about the game’s genre just by looking at the screenshots. For example, if you can see the first person view – for sure it is a shooter. And if we see little figures, which the player is looking down at – for sure it is either a strategy or an RPG. But to be more precise, of course, you have to play it. The genre is determined by the mechanics of the game. What tasks are to be performed in it and how, whether the game has puzzles, what weapons it has, firearms or knives – all this will tell the direction. However, it is still easy to make mistakes and get confused.
